Dr Yoko KATO is an academic visitor for the 2013-14 academic year in the Oyenlab from Tohoku Gakuin University where she holds the post of Associate Professor. She is involved in the project to develop a model of a virtual placenta.
A placenta, which has maternal and foetal circulation systems, is so complicated and delicate that its characteristics need to be carefully evaluated. Part of them cannot be examined during pregnancy, but after delivery. The mathematical models for a placenta have been proposed in order to generally understand the characteristics. However, the check-up system which provides the placental condition in each case and during pregnancy is also necessary. Biomechanics is one of the most important aspects to evaluate the circulation system. This research aims to develop the system which provides biomechanical information in the circulation system in a placenta, based on medical images.
